![]() ![]() In part 1, we discussed how there are three non-overlapping 20 MHz channels in the 2.4 GHz spectrum and nine non-overlapping (Non-DFS, but that’s another article) 20 MHz channels in the 5 GHz band. This time let’s dive more into the deeper points of different channel widths, best practice for signal levels, and some other configuration details that will help optimize Wi-Fi systems for the best experience. Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose. In my previous article ( here), I covered some of the foundations of how Wi-Fi works, including some of the equipment involved, the differences between the 2.4 and 5 Ghz spectrums, and some of the basics of the various channel options to avoid overlap and interference. Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demoĭemo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program's interfaces. In some cases, ads may be show to the users. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. There are many different open source licenses but they all must comply with the Open Source Definition - in brief: the software can be freely used, modified and shared. Programs released under this license can be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. Open Source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify or enhance. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use). Requires 64-bit processor.įreeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Runs in macOS 10.7 or higher (requires a built-in Wi-Fi adapter).Export metrics and network details to CSV file format.Save results for later review and analysis.Editable column for labels or annotations.Customizable colors for easily tracking particular networks.Device name discovery of access points (if available).Detailed description of information elements (IE) advertised by the access point for advanced troubleshooting.Accurate conversion from dBm to percentage (%) for easier analysis and optimization.Signal quality estimations based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).Supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands as well as 20, 40, 80 and 160 MHz channels. ![]() Works with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac wireless networks.Graphical visualization of the wifi environment. It supports 802.11b/g/n networks in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, as well as 802.11a/n/ac in the 5 GHz frequency band. Information includes network name (SSID), BSSID, vendor, channel, band, security configuration, supported data rates, and much more. It gathers configuration and capability information about all the networks it discovers and presents it on an easy-to-use, intuitive user interface. WiFi Explorer is a Mac utility that allows you to scan, monitor, and troubleshoot wireless networks. ![]()
